Tax explainers for individuals, retirees and investors
The questions that come up when a return stops being a single W-2 — retirement distributions, capital gains, IRS notices, and the planning that has to happen before December to matter.
When a personal return stops being simple
Most people’s returns are straightforward for years, and then something changes. A retirement account starts paying out. A brokerage account produces a 1099-B with a basis figure that does not look right. A side business earns enough that nobody is withholding tax on it any more. A letter arrives from the IRS.
None of those are unusual. What is unusual is having anyone explain them before they become a problem — which is what this track is for. Each episode takes one situation, explains the rule that governs it, puts real dollars on the decision, and tells you what to do about it while there is still time to act.
What gets covered
Retirement is the largest theme: required minimum distributions and the ages that trigger them, Roth conversions and the bracket arithmetic behind them, how much of Social Security is actually taxable, and the withholding elections on distributions that quietly determine whether April is comfortable.
Investment income is the second: reading a consolidated 1099 without losing a basis adjustment, harvesting losses without tripping the wash sale rule, and the capital gains rate layering that makes two people with identical income owe very different tax.
And then the situations nobody plans for — an IRS notice with a deadline on it, a home sale, a year with income in two states, a return that needs amending, or several years that were never filed at all.
Who these are for
Anyone whose return has more than one moving part, and who would rather understand the rule than be told the answer. Every episode is general education rather than advice about your facts — but the arithmetic is real and the figures are checked against IRS sources before publication.

Your own situation
These are explainers, not advice
Every episode is general education. If you want to know what a rule means for your facts specifically, that is a conversation — and the first one is free.
Every video and written explainer here is general tax education and does not constitute individualized tax, legal or financial advice. Figures are stated for the tax year shown and are subject to IRS adjustment — verify against current guidance before acting.
